Establishing view

Give the reader a place to begin

A travel story needs more than a collection of attractive details. Start with a view that explains the setting. It might include a street, shoreline, or room. Wide describes its storytelling role here, not a requirement to use a particular lens.

Move toward a relationship

A medium view connects the setting to a main subject. Show how a doorway relates to a building or how a trail curves through trees. Keep enough surroundings to explain the relationship. Changing your viewpoint often matters more than simply zooming.

Select a meaningful detail

Choose a texture, sign, material, or object that adds information. Ask what the detail contributes that the wider picture does not. Avoid collecting or moving objects merely to stage the scene. A detail should make the story more specific rather than repeat an earlier frame.

Edit for connection

Place the three views in order and write one sentence about each. If the sentences make unrelated claims, reconsider the selection. A coherent sequence can be made in an ordinary nearby place. Traveling farther does not automatically make the story stronger.

Practice

Plan or make a three-image sequence in an accessible setting. Give each image a role and explain the link among them in 80 words.
