Choose a place you can revisit

A local park, public street, or permitted overlook can support a long-term project. Select a location with practical access rather than relying on a difficult viewpoint. In New England, changing foliage may be one subject, but architecture, shadows, and water conditions can also support comparison.

Record a repeatable setup

Write down the general position, direction, framing, and the device or lens used. Avoid relying on a precise coordinate where sharing it could expose a sensitive place. A small sketch of the frame can help you return to a similar composition.

Define what you are comparing

Choose a question such as how color or visible vegetation changes. Record actual conditions at each visit. Differences in light, viewpoint, or exposure may affect the comparison, so do not attribute every visible change to season alone.

Let conditions change the plan

Check current access and weather for each visit. A previous visit does not guarantee present access. If the original viewpoint is unavailable, record the change rather than forcing a match. Do not predict foliage timing or trail condition from an old photograph; date your observations clearly.

Practice

Plan four visits to one suitable location. State the project question, the framing you want to repeat, the information you will record, and an alternative if access changes.

Worked example

The project compares how a tree frames a building through the year. Notes record viewpoint and lighting so that a shadow change is not mistaken for a structural change.
