Let the scene remain itself

Leave No Trace promotes preparation, appropriate surfaces, proper waste handling, leaving natural and cultural objects, reducing fire impacts, respecting wildlife, and consideration for others. For photography, that means the composition does not justify damaging a place or changing an animal’s behavior.

Solve the picture with framing

Work from permitted areas. Use framing, a different focal length, or waiting rather than moving plants, collecting objects, or crossing barriers. If the available position does not make the picture possible, choose another subject. A restricted viewpoint can become an exercise in careful selection.

Give wildlife space

Do not bait, feed, follow, or crowd animals for a photograph. Follow the location’s species-specific distance rules and staff guidance. A zoomed image can show detail without approaching, but a lens does not excuse disturbance. Abandon the attempt if your presence is affecting the animal.

Consider other visitors

Keep routes clear and avoid setting equipment where it blocks movement. When photographing a public place, a quieter frame may be achieved by waiting rather than directing strangers out of it. Describe your method truthfully in a caption if a photograph was staged or substantially altered.

Practice

Write three photography situations in which you would change the picture rather than change the place. For each, propose a practical alternative.

Worked example

A branch overlaps the subject. Instead of breaking it, the photographer reframes from the permitted path and makes the branch part of the composition.
